Luis Diaz Leaves Liverpool for Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich has reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign Luis Diaz, who will sign a contract until 2029 with an option to extend. Diaz is expected to fly to Munich soon for a medical before officially joining the team.
Luis Diaz is expected to leave Liverpool's Asia tour in the next few days to fly to Munich for a medical, awaiting his debut with his new team. Bayern had previously pursued several targets, including Florian Wirtz (Leverkusen), Nico Williams (Bilbao), and Bradley Barcola (PSG), but were unsuccessful.
Leroy Sane left Bayern on a free transfer to join Galatasaray, creating a gap in attack that the Bundesliga club is looking to fill with Luis Diaz as a quality replacement.
Liverpool initially demanded a fee of €80 million, but Diaz's determination to leave helped the two parties quickly reach an agreement on a reasonable fee.
Liverpool, despite losing a key player, still benefited financially, having only spent 49 million euros to acquire Diaz from Porto in January 2022.
Last season, the 28-year-old displayed his best form, scoring 13 goals and providing 7 assists in 36 appearances under coach Arne Slot.
Liverpool's reason for agreeing to let Diaz go was related to his salary demands. Bayern Munich was willing to pay 14 million euros per year, significantly higher than Liverpool's offer.
Furthermore, in the summer of 2025, Liverpool spent over 300 million euros on new signings Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, so they needed to reduce their squad.
However, from Bayern Munich's perspective, this was a pressing deal. Diaz was 28 years old and had little room for further development. In contrast, Bayern still had promising young talent Paul Wanner to build around for the future.
In the short term, Luis Diaz's arrival promises to strengthen Bayern's attack, especially after Jamal Musiala's long-term injury and Leroy Sane's departure. This deal is seen as a natural move for the Grey Tigers to maintain their competitiveness across all areas.
